The neighborhood of Ballard is found in the northwest section of Seattle, north of the Ship Canal. There are nearly 50,000 people that live in this part of the city, which contains both residential and commercial development. Ballard is a popular community, especially with younger people who have often moved into Seattle from the surrounding Puget Sound area to start their careers. While Ballard is still very much an urban setting, its location provides for a feeling that isn’t quite as typical of the big city as neighborhoods to the south and closer to Downtown.
Owing in part to a slightly greater distance from the center of the city, housing in Ballard is just a bit less expensive than some other neighborhoods throughout Seattle. The median home listing in Ballard is around $550,000 which is lower than the averages for the city as a whole. There are plenty of condo and townhomes to pick from in this area, as well as single family homes. One of the larger neighborhoods in the city, the MLS listings often show a greater inventory for potential buyers to pick from.
The Chittenden Locks are one of the most notable and interesting features to see in Ballard. Helping boats get to and from the Puget Sound from Lake Union and Lake Washington, the locks date back to the early 1900’s. There is also a strong Nordic history within the Ballard community, and that background is highlighted at the Nordic History Museum. Beyond these specific attractions, there is also plenty of shopping and dining to be enjoyed around Ballard.
Those looking at real estate listings in Ballard can easily reach a number of locations around the city for work or play. It is only a short drive across town to the University of Washington, and the popular Green Lake area is also nearby. The Ballard Bridge can be used to head south toward Downtown Seattle along the Puget Sound waterfront.
Why live in Ballard? Anyone who wishes to live within the city of Seattle but doesn’t want to quite be right in the middle of Downtown should strongly consider Ballard for the variety of housing that it offers, along with its convenient location.
