However you want to identify it, modern contemporary architecture has its advantages but it's also relative. What was contemporary in the 1970s was a retro, clean lines, cubicle style architecture but today, even though those clean, straight lines are still modern, the interior might be completely different than what classified as modern in the 70s. The term "contemporary architecture" is architecture of the present day, whatever that might be. It can be applied to a range of styles of recently built structures in space optimize for current use however, a brand-new home built Cape Cod, Victorian or bungalow style would hardly be called contemporary and modern.

Is there a difference between modern and contemporary?

Contemporary simply means being produced now or the architecture of the moment but modern technically means a break with the past, breaking with traditional styles before the Industrial Revolution. Contemporaries not a single style but could mean a variety of different styles all working together with the newest and latest technology and architecture, while modern recalls early and mid 20th century architecture "embodying the ideals of the machine age: an absence of ornament, structures of steel or concrete, large expanses of glass, a whitewash or another minimal exterior expression, and open floor plans.".

Modern can also be a blend of several types of architecture all using up-to-date technology. Modern could mean a "smart home" for the entire home is controlled using a tablet or smart phone device. Heating and cooling can be controlled by your phone, garage door openers, shades and blinds, "green technology", solar panels and other energy-efficient appliances and materials.

Modernist architecture can be applied to an overarching movement even though it's exact definition can vary greatly. Is typically applied to modernist movements of the turn-of-the-century however, today, modern can include a "form flows function" meaning that the result of design should derive directly from its purpose. There's a simple design, and elimination of unnecessary detail and materials and construction at 90° angles to each other. There can also be use of industrially produced materials and machine aesthetics focusing on horizontal and vertical lines.

Again, you can all still come down to relative opinion. What you feel is modern and contemporary may be traditional to someone else.
